AI Tools Answer in the Same Complex Language Regardless of the User's Reading Comfort

Technology & Digital Literacy Impact: Medium Initial Observation FJ-000107

Last updated

AI tools often reply with difficult words and technical phrasing, even when a person writes in simple or broken language. Users with limited education can feel the tool is not meant for them and stop using it.

Situation

When an everyday person asks an AI tool a question, the answer often comes in formal, academic language with heavy vocabulary. Even when a question is typed in broken language with grammar mistakes, the tool may not simplify its reply.

A user who finds the answers too hard may feel the technology is too difficult for them and give up. AI should notice the user's language style and comfort and reply at a matching level, and for a user who cannot read or write, it could reply by voice in their own language.

Who is affected

First-time AI users, people with limited formal education, non-native English speakers, and older adults.

How often

Described as common. This has not been measured.

Root cause

AI replies tend to follow one default style and do not automatically adjust to who is asking.

Current workaround

Users can ask the tool to explain more simply, or ask another person for help.

Opportunity for improvement

This friction creates opportunities for AI tools that adjust the difficulty of their language to the person, with a simple voice option, while respecting the person's dignity.

Friction Journal observation

A helpful answer is one the person can actually understand.
