Shaking App Icons After an Accidental Long Press Can Frighten New Smartphone Users
Last updated
A slightly long touch on an icon can make all app icons shake and show small minus signs. New users may think the phone is broken, freeze, or press random areas and delete apps by mistake.
Situation
New smartphone users can accidentally press an icon too long while swiping or picking up the phone. The screen changes, all icons begin to shake, and small minus or cross signs appear. For an experienced user this is a normal editing mode.
For an older adult or non-technical user, the sudden movement causes fear. They think they have broken the phone or are about to delete important apps. Some freeze, and others press random places, which can delete apps or folders by mistake. A calm message such as "Would you like to move or remove this app? Yes or No" would help. This behaviour differs by phone system.
Who is affected
New smartphone users, older adults, and people with limited technical knowledge.
How often
Described as global. This has not been measured.
Root cause
A touch gesture meant for editing the home screen can be triggered by accident and gives no plain-language explanation.
Current workaround
Waiting, asking for help, or pressing buttons until it stops.
Opportunity for improvement
This friction creates opportunities for calmer, clearer responses to accidental touches, with simple words and an easy way to undo.
Friction Journal observation
A phone should never make its owner feel they have broken it by touching the screen.
