Users Cannot Easily Tell How Their Phone Will Behave When an Important Call Arrives
Last updated
Phones have separate volume controls for media, calls, alarms, and notifications. Users can easily lose track of which one they changed, miss an important call, or have the phone ring loudly in a quiet place.
Situation
A person lowers the volume of a video, or silences the phone in a meeting, hospital, or place of worship, and later forgets to change it back. When an important call arrives from a family member, doctor, or workplace, the phone may be silent or too quiet. The opposite can also happen, with the phone ringing loudly in a quiet place.
Phones have separate controls for media, calls, ringtones, notifications, and alarms, and what the volume buttons change depends on the situation. The simple question, "If someone calls me now, will my phone ring?", is not easy to answer. One clear view of the sound status would help.
Who is affected
Smartphone users of all ages, especially older adults and people less confident with settings.
How often
Described as common. This has not been measured.
Root cause
Several sound controls with different purposes are combined, and the screen does not clearly show what will happen to an incoming call.
Current workaround
Checking settings, asking someone for help, or keeping the phone on loud.
Opportunity for improvement
This friction creates opportunities for phones to show clearly and in advance what will happen when a call arrives, while keeping the choice to silence.
Friction Journal observation
People want one simple assurance: that they will hear the call that matters.
