EV Battery Percentage Does Not Tell Riders Whether the Vehicle Can Deliver the Power They Need

Transportation Impact: Medium Initial Observation FJ-000139

Last updated

An electric vehicle can show a reasonable battery percentage, yet lose power on a slope or under load. Riders see "how much charge", but not "how much power the vehicle can deliver now", which can leave them stranded.

Situation

A delivery worker, commuter, or rider is travelling on a rural road or a long uphill stretch. The dashboard shows a reasonable battery percentage, so they continue with confidence. When more power is needed to accelerate or climb, performance may drop sharply or enter a protective power-limiting mode.

The rider wonders how the battery can show charge but the vehicle cannot give the power needed. Far from home or a charging point, a sudden loss of usable power can turn a normal journey into a roadside problem. Dashboards that show both remaining charge and available power would help.

Who is affected

Electric vehicle riders and drivers, delivery workers, commuters in hilly or rural areas, and people who depend on an EV for work.

How often

Described as happening in demanding conditions. This has not been measured.

Root cause

The percentage shows estimated remaining energy, while the vehicle's ability to deliver power changes with conditions, and the dashboard does not explain the difference.

Current workaround

Riding cautiously, keeping a larger charge reserve, or charging earlier.

Opportunity for improvement

This friction creates opportunities for dashboards that show both remaining charge and available power in simple terms, and what that means for the journey ahead.

Friction Journal observation

A rider needs to know not only how much battery is left, but whether the vehicle can do what the road demands.
