Work Shoes Often Cause Foot Pain and Fatigue After Many Hours of Standing or Walking

Employment & Work Impact: Medium Initial Observation FJ-000147

Last updated

Shoes that feel fine when bought can cause pain, burning, and sweating after nine or ten hours of work, and more during overtime. Workers who cannot stop working have few affordable options that combine comfort, support, and protection.

Situation

The person who reported this wore normal or safety shoes at work for 9 to 10 hours a day, and sometimes much longer during overtime. After many hours there was foot pain, burning, sweating, and heavy tiredness, and similar difficulties were seen among others who stand or walk for long periods. Shoes may feel comfortable when tried for a few minutes but different after a full day, day after day.

A worker whose job requires standing or walking cannot simply stop when their feet hurt. Specialised shoes and insoles already exist, but comfort depends on the job, the body, and the work environment, and no single feature suits every kind of work.

Who is affected

Office workers on long shifts, factory and warehouse workers, retail staff, construction and industrial workers, and anyone who stands or walks for most of the day.

How often

Reported as a regular experience. This has not been measured.

Root cause

Different jobs need different combinations of cushioning, stability, protection, and durability, and affordable options that match the real conditions are limited. Foot comfort is hard to judge when buying shoes.

Current workaround

Specialised work shoes, cushioned insoles, or simply continuing in discomfort.

Opportunity for improvement

This friction creates opportunities for evidence-based, affordable work footwear matched to different jobs and body needs, so that comfort and protection are not available only to those who can pay for specialised shoes.

Friction Journal observation

Comfort at the end of a long working day should not depend on how much a worker can spend.
