Dishwashers Automate Washing but Leave Users to Prevent and Diagnose Hidden Problems Such as Clogs, Detergent Release, Hard Water, and Drainage
Last updated
A dishwasher can finish a long cycle with dirty dishes because of a clogged spray arm, poor detergent release, low water pressure, hard water, or a blocked filter. The user may find out only afterwards and must decide what to check.
Situation
A dishwasher is meant to automate dishwashing, but the user may still need to understand hidden conditions. Dishes can stay dirty because a spray arm is blocked, the detergent dispenser did not release, or water pressure was low. Filters collect food residue, blocked drains leave standing water, and poor drainage can cause odours. Hard water affects cleaning and may need detergent, softening salt, or rinse aid.
A power cut can stop a cycle and leave the user unsure whether to resume or restart. The user often discovers a problem only after the cycle has finished, and has to work out which hidden condition caused it.
Who is affected
Households, first-time and infrequent users, older adults, and people with limited access to appliance service.
How often
Reported as a regular experience. This has not been measured.
Root cause
The machine automates the process, but the knowledge to make it succeed (loading, detergent, water, filters, drainage) stays with the user.
Current workaround
Washing again by hand, cleaning filters and spray arms, checking hoses, or calling service.
Opportunity for improvement
This friction creates opportunities for dishwashers that detect and explain problems before or during a cycle, and tell the user what to do.
Friction Journal observation
An automated machine still feels manual if the person has to prevent and diagnose its failures.
