Forgotten Computer Passwords Can Lock People Out, and Easier Sign-In Options Are Not Always Available

Digital Identity & Security Impact: Medium Initial Observation FJ-000105

Last updated

People who forget a laptop or computer password can lose access in the middle of work. Many laptops lack an affordable fingerprint sensor, and complex passwords are especially hard for people with limited education.

Situation

Phones commonly unlock with a fingerprint, but many everyday laptops do not have an affordable fingerprint reader. When a complex password is forgotten, getting back into the device is difficult, and this can happen in the middle of a project.

Long passwords of letters and numbers are hard to remember, and especially hard for people with limited education. Easier ways to sign in, such as face or fingerprint recognition, would help, as long as they are secure and a PIN or password remains as a backup.

Who is affected

Laptop and computer users, especially people who use a device only occasionally, older adults, and people with limited education.

How often

Described as a repeated experience for many people. This has not been measured.

Root cause

Computer sign-in still depends heavily on memorised text passwords, and easier options are not available on every device.

Current workaround

People reset the password, use a backup PIN, ask others for help, or write the password down.

Opportunity for improvement

This friction creates opportunities for simple, secure sign-in options that do not depend on remembering long passwords, available at low cost on ordinary devices, with clear recovery steps when access is lost.

Friction Journal observation

A lock is only useful if the owner can still open it.
